Workplace for people with disabilities

Workplace for people with disabilities

A company is obliged to equip a special workplace for people with disabilities – this is a legal requirement. There are several regulations governing access to the premises. What should the st-up of the premises be for free access for people who move on wheelchairs, as well as for people with visual and hearing impairments?

State Construction Standards.

The state construction standards clearly regulate the requirements for the entrance group – ramps, information boards, a bell to call for help if a person is in a wheelchair or, for example, a visitor is an elderly person. Low-mobile groups of people also might need help.

Set-up of the premises.

There should be ramps inside the rooms that have a few stairs. The ramps may be mobile (two wide metal plates that allow you to ride in a wheelchair). In addition, several people who will be in charge of helping people with disabilities, and low-mobility groups should be identified – they will help the movement by guiding the route. Moreover, information boards should also be duplicated in Braille print and mnemonics.

A mnemonic is a scheme that allows visually impaired people to move around the room. All ways of evacuation are documented in this scheme: corridors, and office titles. One can see them because the information is placed on an orange background, and in addition, is being duplicated in Braille print. Handrails between floors and toilets for people with disabilities should also be provided.

Therefore, the workplace must be accessible to reach without physical effort.

• Convenience. Often there are no ramps or the passages are narrow in public places, making it impossible to enter the building. These things need to be considered to make the set-up convenient for everybody.

• Communication and access to information. The Deaf and Hard of Hearing or people with visual impairments should, on a par with others, receive the necessary information, so it is important to provide them with special programs.

• The workplace should be comfortable not only from the inside but also from the outside.

• Ramps and wide entrance doors must be equipped.

• Necessary computer programs must be available.

• Accessible and comfortable parking should be provided. This is a particularly hot topic for city dwellers with various forms of disabilities. Resolving this issue is one of the top priorities.
