Project: "Promoting the creation of conditions for the social adaptation of people with hearing impairments in the extraordinary circumstances of martial law", grantee ISAR Ednannia within the framework of the "Sectoral Support Initiative for Civil Society", implemented by ISAR Ednannia in consortium with the Ukrainian Center for Independent Political Research (UCIPR) and the Center for Democracy and Rule of Law (CEDEM).
Purpose: to promote the creation of opportunities to remove obstacles and barriers that prevent people with hearing and visual impairments from perceiving information related to military operations and their consequences, which are carried out during the armed aggression of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine, in forms convenient for them, which will help them to respond quickly to the challenges and needs in the extraordinary circumstances of wartime.
Objectives:
- Installing specialized software (a mobile application that works 24/7) for 1000 people with hearing impairments to communicate and receive information via video communication with sign language interpreters.
- Filming and publishing of videos with sign language interpretation (instructions and algorithms for actions during the military aggression of the Russian Federation, instructions on how to help the Ukrainian army, instructions and information on evacuating people from the war zone, etc.), sign language interpretation of official briefings, recommendations of the Ministry of Health. All videos were accompanied by audio recordings for people with partial hearing loss who do not speak sign language, as well as for people with full or partial vision loss, to reach the target audiences in a form that is acceptable to them.
As part of the project implemented:
- 1000 users of the mobile application "Sign Language Translator" received 60 minutes of free communication with an online sign language interpreter.
- 30 videos were created and published as part of the evening section "We know, don't sleep!". During the project implementation, 749 publications were made. People with hearing and visual impairments gained access to important events and news from Ukraine and the world. The news is translated into sign language for deaf people and has voiceover for hearing impaired people who do not speak sign language and for people with partial or complete vision loss. The videos were published on the official channels of the NGO, including Facebook and Instagram, as well as in Telegram communities (General group – community of the deaf, Kharkiv and Lviv groups). Reposts of publications were made on social media on behalf of the NGO to closed communities. The total audience reach across all channels was over 185,000 people. The number of interactions with publications was over 5,000 (reactions, comments, reposts, clicks).
