"Barrier-free Ukraine for the Deaf: Monitoring the Accessibility of Socially Important Infrastructure" is a project with which the non-governmental organization Public Movement “Social Unity” won the competition announced by the Fund for Social Protection of the Disabled.
The implementation period is until the end of 2021.
This is not the first year that the non-governmental organization Public Movement “Social Unity” has been working to create a barrier-free space for people with hearing impairments. Many government and municipal organizations were visited by the team members and, unfortunately, disappointing conclusions were drawn - most of them are not adapted to the needs of people with complete or partial hearing loss. However, this is not the only category of Ukrainians who are deprived of the opportunity to receive services without barriers. That is why a special program has been created, it will monitor accessibility and provide specific recommendations for creating comfortable conditions for people with various forms of disabilities to receive services.
This program is about access to the physical environment, transport, information and communication systems, technologies, and services for people with different types of disabilities and low-mobility groups. The analysis of the accessibility of organizations and institutions for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing will be conducted to perform the tasks of the program. Project participants will visit institutions and assess the level of adaptation of these organizations to the needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing people. The possibility of communication and solving social and domestic issues in hospitals, local authorities, administrative service centers, and other state and municipal institutions, where there is a need to apply for certain services from time to time, will be analyzed.
The project aims to create an inclusive space for people with various forms of disabilities, as it provides a real opportunity to lead an independent life and develop comprehensively. The project will monitor more than 100 sites in Ukraine and provide specific recommendations for removing existing barriers. These guidelines will apply not only to site accessibility for people with hearing impairments but also for people with other forms of disabilities.
Let's make this world accessible and convenient for everyone, without exceptions and restrictions!
Ukraine without barriers – to be!
