The non-governmental organization Public Movement “Social Unity” promotes modern IT solutions for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people at the state level. The experience and achievements of the non-governmental organization were included in the National Strategy for barrier-free space in Ukraine, initiated by First Lady Olena Zelenska, and representatives of the team became members of the Supervisory Council of Barrier-Free.
Ukraine's statistics show a population of 41 million and around 2 million people with hearing loss of different degrees. About 400,000 Ukrainians in the world speak sign language, perceiving it as their native and only language. Deaf people constantly face the necessity to address urgent needs and face barriers.
For the Deaf people, everything that surrounds them is different:
- 40% of Deaf people avoid the need to read and write. Texts and subtitles are not a solution.
- Lip reading does not give the opportunity to fully understand the essence.
- Finding a job and employment is a challenging quest.
- Getting quality services in state and municipal institutions is a dream.
- Making a phone call. Loudly calling for help. Verifying identity by voice…
Everything that others are used to doing, turns into an endless series of barriers for people with hearing impairments. People around speak "foreign" language because the native language for the Deaf is a sign language. Dialogues in dreams people with hearing loss see in sign language. Deaf and Hard of Hearing people have equal rights and should have the same opportunities as other citizens of Ukraine.
