Violence is one of the most common forms of human rights violations. There are 4 types of violence: physical, psychological, sexual, and economic. Few people know about the latter, and even those who are victims of economic violence at home often do not even realize that they are victims.
Economic violence – intentional deprivation of food, shelter, clothing, other property, funds or documents, or the ability to use them, leaving without care, obstruction of obtaining necessary treatment or rehabilitation services, ban on work, forced labor, ban on study, etc.
The non-governmental organization Public Movement "Social Unity" undertook to implement the project "Countering Violence against Women with Hearing Impairments", implemented under the program "Barrier Free Ukraine for the Deaf" and to inform Deaf and Hard of Hearing women and girls about violence, about which "it is typical to remain silent."
How to understand that you are being subjected to economic violence:
• you are deprived of material resources, not given money;
• forced to regularly report on money spent, take away the earned money;
• forbid a family member to work against his or her own will and ability to work;
• force a family member to do hard, unbearable work;
• damage, harm personal property;
• force to beg.
The most common manifestation of economic violence in Ukraine is the situation in which a man expels a woman and children from home. Less often the opposite happens.
What should a person who has suffered from economic violence do?
It has to be understood that it is extremely difficult to prove the fact of this type of violence. It is even more difficult to bring the offender to justice. But everyone needs to know their rights and have healthy self-esteem in order to see the manifestations of a certain type of violence in time.
Speak. First, all your thoughts should be expressed to a partner, a person who restricts your rights; as an option – offer your vision of family budgeting and distribution of funds.
Know your rights. A person must clearly recognize every action against them as possible or impossible and understand whether their rights are restricted in a particular situation.
Find the reason. Understand why you have fallen victim to economic violence: poor work, insufficient wages, lack of higher education?
Another way. If all the work has been done and there is no result – you should go from the tyrant, the situation is unlikely to resolve itself.
If you are a victim of economic violence at home and want to find a way out of this situation – in the near future you will be able to apply through a widget on the website of the non-governmental organization Public Movement "Social Unity" for advice from a psychologist and a lawyer with the help of a sign language interpreter to fulfill the objectives of the project "Barrier Free Ukraine for the Deaf: Countering Violence against Women with Hearing Impairments".
