Excursion to the Boim chapel, Lviv

In June, we discovered another treasure in the city of Lviv. Together with the NGO "Public Movement "Social Unity" and sign language interpreter Olena Chernysheva, we continue to enjoy travelling to places with a long history. This time, a group of people with hearing impairments visited the Boim Chapel, which is now a popular tourist attraction.

The Boim family was wealthy and influential. The chapel was built on the initiative of Heorhii Boim and completed by his son Pavlo. This architectural gem served as a burial place for three generations of the Boim family – for 14 family members. Later, the keys to the chapel were transferred to the Latin Cathedral, but during the Austrian rule, the burials were moved, and their current location is unknown.

Today, the Boim Chapel is not only an artistic decoration of Lviv, but also one of the departments of the Bohdan Voznytskyi National Gallery of Art. This work of architecture is like a real "Bible in stone". On both sides of the entrance are the figures of the Apostles Peter and Paul, and above them are the prophets of the Old Testament. Above them are scenes of the Passion of Christ: scourging, carrying the cross, crucifixion, and taking down from the cross.

The wooden furniture decorated with carvings has remained almost unchanged since the beginning of the XVII century, the unique altar depicting the prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, the scenes of the Last Supper and the Washing of Feet, original wooden elements, an epitaph, a lock and authentic wrought iron door elements fill the chapel with a special sacredness.

See you soon on our travels around Lviv!
